If you’re looking to grow your website traffic, chances are you’ve heard about Google Ads and Organic SEO. But what’s the difference — and more importantly, which one is better for your business? The answer depends on your goals, timeline, and budget.

Let’s break it down.

What Are Google Ads?
Google Ads (formerly AdWords) are paid advertisements that appear at the top of search results. You bid on keywords, and when users search those terms, your ad may appear. You pay each time someone clicks.

Pros of Google Ads:

  • Instant visibility — ads appear immediately once your campaign is live.
  • Great for promotions, launches, or urgent traffic.
  • You can target specific demographics, locations, and times.

Cons of Google Ads:

  • You pay for every click, whether it converts or not.
  • Costs can rise quickly, especially in competitive industries.
  • When you stop paying, the traffic stops too.

What Is Organic SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your website’s visibility in unpaid (organic) search results. This involves optimising keywords, content, backlinks, site speed, and more.

Pros of Organic SEO:

  • Long-term traffic that doesn’t disappear when you stop spending.
  • Builds authority and credibility over time.
  • Higher click-through rates compared to paid ads.

Cons of Organic SEO:

  • Takes time — results can take 3 to 6 months or more.
  • Requires consistent content and technical maintenance.
  • Competitive keywords may need more effort to rank.

Which One Should You Choose?
If you want quick results or have a short-term goal (like a sale or product launch), Google Ads are ideal. If you want lasting visibility, lower long-term costs, and sustainable growth, SEO is the better investment.

Best of Both Worlds?
Many businesses combine both strategies. Start with Google Ads for immediate traffic while building your SEO foundation in the background. Over time, you can reduce ad spend as organic traffic grows.

Google Ads and Organic SEO
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your strategy should align with your business stage, goals, and resources. At Avanuval, we help clients develop smart digital strategies — whether that’s ranking higher with SEO, reaching new audiences with Google Ads, or both.

It is now known that search engine optimisation is absolutely critical as research shows that 93% of all buying decisions start with an online search.

To put this into perspective, here are some statistics regarding click through traffic based on the ranking of a website on Google.

  1. The first ranking position in the search results receives 42.25% of all click-through traffic
  2. The second position receives 11.94%
  3. Third position on the first page obtains 8.47%
  4. The fourth placed position on page one receives 6.05%
  5. The others on the first page are under 5% of click through traffic
  6. The first ten results (page one ) received 89.71% of all click-through traffic,
  7. The next 10 results (normally listed on the second page of results) received 4.37%
  8. Third page receives a total  of 2.42 %
  9. The fifth page receives a total of only 1.07%
  10. All other pages of results received less than 1% of total search traffic clicks.

Also really important to note is that the results not only provide the greatest amount of traffic, but instills trust in consumers as to the worthiness and importance of the company/website.
